What is EMDR? Can I have it online?

Absolutely you can! There’s a well established practice of providing effective EMDR online. In fact online makes accessible and available. Where guidelines allow, face to face therapy remains an option.

EMDR is a highly effective psychotherapy; recommended within the NHS NICE guidelines and endorsed by the World Health Organisation. The letters stand for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing and, although the name is a bit of a mouthful, its effectiveness makes it worthwhile to find out more about.

Established therapy

EMDR was developed by American psychologist Francine Shapiro in 1987 and was originally used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. It has excellent evidence base.

After its success with PTSD - previously a notoriously difficult condition to treat - EMDR has been subsequently shown to be highly effective with more common conditions, such as general anxiety, phobias, panic disorder, social and health anxiety, low mood, depression, addictions and low self-esteem.
